INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
While I work with most age groups and all gender identities, my focus is primarily with adult men. Historically, men tend to seek therapy only when circumstances in their lives become unbearable, often due to trauma and painful loss. I have tailored my practice to address the psychological and emotional distress that most men conceal from the world. There is important, preventative work to attend to in the male psyche and men have very recently become more interested in pursuing this critical work at all points of their journeys. With skillful guidance, they can acquire the tools necessary to integrate the under-functioning or lost parts of themselves to regain a sense of wholeness.
CLIENT TESTIMONIALS
“Doug is such a great therapist and has helped and cared for me in so many ways. He is kind, compassionate, and wise and these qualities really shine through during our sessions. I feel safe with him and I encourage anyone who needs help to consider pursuing Doug as their therapist.”
“I first came to see Dr. Wheeler while I was going through a very contentious divorce. He was tremendously helpful to me emotionally as I faced this very difficult crisis and supported me through all the practical matters related to the divorce proceedings. I don’t know how I would be getting through this without Doug. I am very grateful to have found Dr. Wheeler.”
“Simply put, Doug is the best therapist I could have asked for. I have seen multiple therapists in the past; some have been helpful, others not as much. Doug seemed to always ask the right questions in helping me navigate my issues. He also used techniques to help me visualize and work through specific scenarios that were affecting me, which is exactly what I needed! Doug is simply a great listener. He doesn’t throw out quick fixes or solutions but helped guide me towards healing. I can’t recommend him enough, as he has done absolute wonders and has given me so much!”
“I am deeply grateful for the guidance and support I've received from Doug Wheeler over the last year. His remarkable ability to listen attentively and understand my cultural background, despite our very different upbringings, has been both surprising and reassuring. His expertise in internal family systems has been instrumental in helping me navigate my relationships with my mother and my spouse, as well as with my work. Doug has skillfully guided me to connect with my inner self, allowing me access to parts of my past that were previously unreachable. Through Doug's guidance, I now have a heightened awareness of my emotional state, and invaluable tools to process everyday stress and anxiety. Doug has not only been a guiding professional but also a compassionate partner in my journey towards mental wellness and self-discovery.”
~ABOUT~
I am a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Washington and have been a practicing psychotherapist for over 35 years. While I have extensive experience working with both men and women, I chose in 2012 to focus primarily on men while continuing to do couples therapy.
My therapy style is personal and interactive in support of developing a relationship of trust with my clients. I draw from contemplative and cognitive-behavioral theories firmly grounded in the IFS Model (Internal Family Systems). I respect the role of spirituality in the healing process and honor all religious and cultural traditions. I help my clients explore their presenting problems through the lens of trauma, both present and past (family of origin wounds), which helps to integrate their many parts into an alive and constructive whole. My primary therapeutic goal is to work toward the vital necessity of individuating and actualizing the Self.
I am currently operating a full-time mental health practice on the eastside of Seattle, WA. Please visit my Psychology Today Profile for more details. You can find some of my creative activities at selfcitygod.com, including my new book Reimagining Jonah which is out now!
